I know what you have been thinking, what in the world does BrixChicks mean and how did they come up with this name? Let me tell you the story, four of us came together and decided we wanted to create a space where girls could come together and find tips on how to be healthy, succeed in their classes and also learn how to believe in themselves. This led us to come up with some core values which are Bold, Raw, Inspired and Extraordinary. As we sat and wondered what our name should be, we thought about what our goal was. We want to give girls the building blocks needed to thrive in their lives, especially during the college years. We then thought about how bricks are a really great and sturdy building block and what do our core values start with? You guessed it, we can make a word that sounds like “bricks” using the first letter of our core values, okay well most of the first letter, extraordinary is the exception but we thought we could let it slide. So, let’s talk a little bit about what these core values mean.

Be bold. This is a statement we hear all the time from people who are trying to motivate us. Whether it is being bold enough to go up to that cute boy and give him your number, or bold enough to answer a question in class or even just bold in what your outfit choice for the day will be. We do things every day that we have to be bold in, but the thing is being bold is going to look different for each of us. None of us are exactly the same because God made us all unique. I might talk to strangers in the grocery store every time I go and in my mind it is no big deal to do that but the idea of talking to a stranger could be really scary to you. For this reason, we shouldn’t compare ourselves to each other. We want to encourage you to find ways to stretch yourself a little out of your comfort zone. Find ways that you can be bold and do them! Trust us, you will be so glad you did!

Be raw. Yes, I know what you are thinking. “What in the world does be raw mean?” Trust us when this word first came up, we were a little confused by it to, but the more we thought about it the more we began to understand it. Raw isn’t just the state your chicken is in before you cook it. When you use the word raw to describe something that isn’t food it means, “in a natural, untreated state”. Now that is pretty powerful. To be raw means that you are being unapologetically yourself. The thing is you are not going to ever be able to please everyone, but what is important is staying true to who you are. We believe that by being raw you are embracing who God made you to be which will lead to a life of happiness and fulfillment.

Be inspired. Oh inspiration, the thing that we never seem to have when we need it but strikes when we are least expecting it. Have you ever felt like you just can’t seem to find the energy to do what it is you need to do? You sit down to write a paper and you just can’t seem to think of a single thing to write. I think this has happened to all of us at least once. So how can you find inspiration when you need it? Some people find going for a walk out in nature helps them to feel more inspired, others read a book or watch a movie in the hopes of finding inspiration from someone else’s art while still others are inspired when they can sit alone and reflect. It comes down to the fact that inspiration isn’t something that you can always force to come to you, but when you find the way that it most often comes you won’t ever want to stop finding it.

Be extraordinary. Most people would tell you that being extraordinary means that you are the best athlete, or the top of your class, or a talented musician or maybe even all of the above. Another set of people that might come to mind when you think of extraordinary people are those who have had a huge impact on the world. People like Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr. or Albert Einstein. While yes these were definitely extraordinary people, you also personally know people in your life who are extraordinary. It’s not about being better than others, it’s being better than you were yesterday. Everyone has the opportunity to be extraordinary, it’s just the question of whether you are up for the challenge.
